Sharklab-Malta recovered a fertilised egg of a Thornback Ray, Raja clavata, from its dead landed mother at the wholesale fish market in Malta in early 2016. On 25th October 2016 after nearly 6 months developing, the male skate pup was born and now is continuing to grow and become stronger..
It will be released back to the seas around the Maltese islands in the future, where it belongs.
The recovery was part of the “Oviparous Species Recovery and Release Program” which has already successfully recovered many shark eggs of which over 260 to date have been released back into the sea.
This project is supported by the Malta National Aquarium, Maltaqua dive centre, Blue Food..Green Future ? as well as many members of the public.
